Characterization of Small-Scale Farming as an Engine of Agricultural Development in Mountainous South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo

Mountainous South Kivu is an agropastoral zone in Democratic Republic of Congo where small-scale agriculture predominant. Due to its location and potential, this region contributes the food security population neighboring territories. This research aimed establish a characterization farming area order highlight factors that differentiate farms. To achieve objective, we adopted holistic approach coupled with descriptive statistics, analysis variance, Student's t-test for data analysis. Data were collected from purposive sample 211 farmers 2018 2019, respectively. The results revealed differentiation farms based on number plots per farm, choice production systems, cropping system, land tenure, gross margin, value added, net farm income achieved at level. Therefore, solutions such as access finance allowing diversify their restoration rural areas, rehabilitation existing creation new feeder roads, setting promotion very strong dynamic farmers' structures would allow significant development agricultural activities study area.
